The first step is to disable the automatic screen stretching in the BIOS. Then you can try installing.
You will have to use one of the safe video modes until you install the new NVIDIA driver. (When I tried installing from my R5 Pro CD, the 1440x900 resolution was not available, but 1280x1024 seemed to actually be 1440x900; BeOS MAX had them right.)
This laptop has a 3.2Ghz Pentium IV with Hyperthreading. There is a cpu_fix
http://bebits.com/app/3999
that is supposed to fix the timing. It fixed a lot of things, but it is still impossible to watch a movie as the audio does not synchronize with the video even with vlc.
There is also some P4 kernel from the Russians
http://wiki.bebits.com/page/TimingaPIV
but it doesn’t work for me.
The Atheros wireless card doesn’t work in BeOS. There are some open-source drivers
http://madwifi.sourceforge.net/
but they have not been ported to BeOS. The linux drivers are not completely Free Software. There is some binary module to comply with FCC regulations, but the BSD folks seem to not care about the FCC.
Overall, this is a very nice laptop. I have Windows XP, Debian GNU/Linux and BeOS installed, but BeOS does nothing special since the media stuff doesn’t synchronize.
If someone has some tips for me so I can fix this problem, or wants to port the mad-wifi drivers, let me know.

The sound synchronization was embarassingly a user error. The movie I was trying to play was a goofy one, and couldn’t be played correctly in any OS. Normal files work fine. |
